How to Choose the Right Facial: A Guide to Our Six Facials
Not sure which facial fits your skin and your schedule? Compare our six facials by goal and time, and see which add-ons pair well with each.
If you want to choose the right facial, start with two questions: what do you want your skin to look and feel like when you leave, and how much time do you have? Match those answers to the facial menu and the decision becomes simple. A short window and a general refresh point to a 30-minute express facial. Dry, tight skin points to a hydration-focused facial. Dull, uneven-looking skin points to a brightening facial. A special occasion points to the longest, most complete session.
At BZ Esthetics Studio in Copley, Ohio, we offer six facials, each built around a different goal and a different amount of time. This guide walks through all six, explains who each one tends to suit, and shows which add-ons pair well with each. It is written for clients across Northeast Ohio, including Fairlawn, Akron and Summit County.
What You Need to Know Before You Choose
- Start with the goal, not the name. Pick the outcome you care about most: a quick refresh, hydration, a brighter look, calmer and cleaner-feeling skin, a firmer feel, or a full luxury session.
- Time matters. Our facials run 30, 60 or 90 minutes. The 30-minute option is the easiest to fit into a busy day or a short lunch break.
- Add-ons are optional. Enhancements run 10 to 30 minutes and can be added to a facial. Choose one or two at most, so the session stays focused.
- Results vary. Skin responds differently from person to person, and one facial is a starting point.
Step One: Know Your Skin and Your Goal
Describe your skin in plain words rather than by what you have seen advertised. Consider how it feels at the end of an ordinary day. Cleveland Clinic's guide to skin types describes dry skin as skin that does not produce enough sebum, oily skin as an overproduction of sebum, and sensitive skin as a separate matter that is not about how much oil your skin produces, and it notes that your skin type can change over the course of your life.
How does your skin feel by late afternoon?
- Tight, dry or a little flaky: you are likely looking for hydration and comfort.
- Dull, flat or uneven-looking: you are likely looking for exfoliation and a brighter appearance.
- Shiny, congested or prone to breakouts: you are likely looking for deep cleansing and balance.
- Soft but less firm than it used to feel: you are likely looking for a firming, lifting-style session.
- Fine day to day, but you want a polished look for an event: you are likely looking for a complete, longer facial.
If you want a deeper look at your skin type, our guide to a skincare routine by skin type explains oily, dry, combination, sensitive and normal skin in plain language.
How much time do you have?
Plan honestly. If you have 30 minutes, book the express facial and enjoy it, rather than squeezing a longer service into too little time. Any enhancement you add extends your appointment by its own length.
The Six Facials at BZ Esthetics Studio
Here is each facial, what it is built for, and who it tends to suit. You can see the full list on our facials page.
BZ Glow Express (30 minutes): the quick refresh
This is our shortest facial, designed to refresh your skin and bring back a healthy-looking glow in minimal time. The session includes a double cleanse, gentle manual exfoliation, a customized mask, a cooling globe massage, targeted serums, moisturizer, eye and lip care, and sun protection.
Choose it if: you are new to facials, you have an event this week, or simply have half an hour.
Pairs well with: a short add-on such as eye rejuvenation or a gentle lactic peel, each 15 minutes. That keeps the whole visit under an hour.
The Quench Facial (60 minutes): deep hydration
The Quench Facial is built for skin that feels dry, tight or dehydrated. For the days between visits, the American Academy of Dermatology notes that creams add more moisture to the skin and preserve more water than lotions, which is why people with dry skin may want a cream rather than a lotion. It combines a water-based exfoliation step, ultrasonic exfoliation, a serum infusion, oxygen and cooling steps, and the finishing touches included in every facial. The aim is skin that feels replenished.
Choose it if: your skin feels tight after cleansing, makeup sits unevenly on dry patches, or the winter months in Northeast Ohio leave your skin feeling parched.
Pairs well with: the LED light therapy add-on for a calming, relaxing finish, or a neck and décolleté treatment so your face and neck feel consistent.
Radiance Reset Facial (60 minutes): brightening and texture
Radiance Reset is designed for skin that looks dull, uneven or rough in texture. You choose your exfoliation method with your esthetician: ultrasonic exfoliation, a gentle milk-based exfoliant, a gentle lactic peel or a gentle glycolic peel. The facial also includes a serum infusion, oxygen steps and brightening serums.
The American Academy of Dermatology explains that exfoliation removes dead skin cells from the outer layer of the skin and that chemical exfoliation uses alpha and beta hydroxy acids to dissolve them, while also cautioning that over-exfoliating could lead to red, irritated skin.
Choose it if: your skin looks tired, your tone looks uneven, or your texture feels rough under your hand. If you have specific discoloration you are concerned about, check with your healthcare provider or dermatology professional first, because this facial is a cosmetic service and not a way to address a skin condition.
Pairs well with: a dermaplaning add-on for a smooth surface, or eye rejuvenation. Ask your esthetician how to sequence a peel and dermaplaning, since exfoliation steps are not always combined in the same visit. Our guide to dermaplaning explains what the add-on involves.
Clear & Calm Facial (60 minutes): congested or breakout-prone skin
Clear & Calm is designed for congested or breakout-prone skin that also feels a little reactive. The session includes a deep cleanse, double exfoliation, careful extractions, a purifying mask (clay or a tea tree jelly mask), a cooling globe massage and targeted serums. It is meant to leave skin feeling cleaner, balanced and calmer.
An important note: this is a cosmetic facial, not a medical treatment. If you have persistent or painful breakouts, cystic bumps, scarring, or a diagnosed skin condition such as acne or rosacea, please see your healthcare provider or a dermatologist. They can diagnose what is happening and recommend care. Tell your esthetician about any prescription products you use.
Choose it if: your pores look congested, your T-zone is shiny, or your skin gets occasional breakouts and feels irritated afterward.
Pairs well with: LED light therapy for a quiet, calming close to the session. Ask your esthetician before adding dermaplaning or a peel if your skin is actively breaking out or feels sensitive that day.
Lift & Sculpt Facial (60 minutes): a firming, contouring feel
Lift & Sculpt is designed for clients who want their skin to feel firmer and look more contoured. The session combines a water-based exfoliation step, ultrasonic exfoliation, a serum infusion, radio frequency skin tightening, oxygen and cooling steps, and red LED light therapy.
Choose it if: you notice your skin feels softer or less firm than it once did, or you want a facial built around a firming, contoured-looking finish. Many clients notice a smoother, more lifted-looking appearance, though results vary. Cleveland Clinic describes radio frequency as using low-frequency electromagnetic waves to generate heat that may stimulate collagen and elastin, and says the treated area may feel warm with tingling vibrations or mild discomfort. Its description covers treatments from medical providers, so a spa facial step is not the same thing and your own results may differ.
Pairs well with: a neck and décolleté treatment or hand renewal so the areas people often forget get the same attention. Because radio frequency and LED are already part of this facial, you generally do not need to add them separately. Our guide to radio frequency add-ons explains the sensation and what to expect.
The BZ Red Carpet Facial (90 minutes): the complete luxury session
This is the most complete facial on the menu. It brings together water-based exfoliation, ultrasonic exfoliation, a serum infusion, oxygen and cooling steps, radio frequency, LED light therapy, double masking, and lymphatic and facial massage. It is a long, unhurried appointment.
Choose it if: you have a wedding, reunion, milestone birthday or photo session coming up, or you want one extended session where you do not have to choose among enhancements. A gift card makes it an easy gift.
Pairs well with: a scalp aromatherapy massage for a relaxing finish. Most of the popular enhancements are already built into this facial, so there is rarely a need to stack more.
How to Choose by Goal and Time
Use this quick guide if you already know what you want.
- Thirty minutes and a general refresh: BZ Glow Express.
- Sixty minutes and dry or tight skin: The Quench Facial.
- Sixty minutes and dull, uneven-looking or rough skin: Radiance Reset Facial.
- Sixty minutes and congested or breakout-prone skin: Clear & Calm Facial.
- Sixty minutes and a firmer, lifted feel: Lift & Sculpt Facial.
- Ninety minutes and a full luxury experience: The BZ Red Carpet Facial.
If two options seem equally right, choose the one that matches the concern you notice first in the mirror, and try the other next visit.
Which Add-Ons Make Sense With Your Facial
Enhancements are short, focused services that you add to a facial. They are useful, but more is not always better. Choose one or two that match your goal. Our full guide to facial add-ons covers each in detail, and you can browse them all under enhancements.
- LED light therapy (30 minutes): a relaxing, quiet add-on that suits most facials, particularly Quench and Clear & Calm. Cleveland Clinic notes that red LED light may stimulate collagen production, that LED light therapy is often used alongside other treatments such as facials, and that you typically need a series of in-office treatments. Its description covers in-office treatments, so a spa add-on is a relaxing, cosmetic version of the same technique and your own results may differ.
- Radio frequency (20 minutes): a firming-feel add-on for facials that do not already include it, such as Glow Express or Quench.
- Eye rejuvenation (15 minutes): a targeted treatment for the delicate eye area that can be added to any facial.
- Neck and décolleté (20 minutes): extends your facial downward, which many clients appreciate.
- Lymphatic drainage (15 minutes): a gentle massage that many clients find relaxing.
- Gentle lactic or glycolic peel (15 minutes): a light exfoliation add-on. Our guide on how to prepare for a facial peel explains what to do before your visit.
- Dermaplaning (25 minutes): a blade exfoliation that leaves the skin surface smooth.
- Hand renewal (15 minutes) and scalp aromatherapy massage (10 minutes): comfort-focused extras.
Common Mistakes When Choosing a Facial
- Booking by trend instead of by skin. A facial that suited a friend may not suit you. Choose by your own goal.
- Stacking too many add-ons. Two well-chosen enhancements usually beat five.
- Skipping the consultation. Tell your esthetician about your products, your routine, and anything your skin has been through lately.
- Trying a new facial the day before an event. Schedule it a week or two ahead so you know how your skin responds.
- Ignoring aftercare. What you do afterward matters. Read our guide to post-facial care before you go.
When to Book and How Often
Many clients book a facial every four to six weeks, and Cleveland Clinic suggests that a schedule of about every four to six weeks may line up with your skin's natural cycle, though your esthetician can suggest a rhythm that suits your skin and schedule. For an event, many clients plan their facial one to two weeks beforehand.
Seasons matter too. Cold Ohio winters often call for hydration, while warmer months suit brightening and daily sun protection. Cleveland Clinic notes that skin type can change from summer to winter, which is one reason your best-fit facial may shift through the year (skin types guide).
Frequently Asked Questions
Which facial should a first-time client choose?
BZ Glow Express is a comfortable starting point because it is short and gentle on the schedule. If you have a specific goal, such as hydration or brightening, a 60-minute facial matched to that goal is also a good first choice. Your esthetician will talk through your skin before beginning.
Can I get a facial if I have a skin condition or take medication?
That depends on the condition, so speak with your healthcare provider first, especially if you have a diagnosed condition, are pregnant, or use prescription skincare or other medications. Share the details with your esthetician at your appointment so they can adjust your session. Some services may be postponed if your skin is irritated.
Is Clear & Calm a treatment for acne?
No. Clear & Calm is a cosmetic facial designed for congested or breakout-prone skin. It cleanses deeply and supports a calmer, more balanced look. For acne or any ongoing skin condition, see your healthcare provider or a dermatologist.
How do I choose between Quench and Radiance Reset?
Choose Quench if your skin mainly feels dry, tight or dehydrated. Choose Radiance Reset if your skin mainly looks dull, uneven or rough. If you honestly have both, start with the concern that bothers you more, and plan the other for your next visit.
How long should I wait to wear makeup after a facial?
Your esthetician will give guidance based on your session. Many clients prefer to keep skin simple for the rest of the day. See our post-facial care guide for the dos and don'ts.
Why Choose a Professional Esthetician for Your Facial
According to Cleveland Clinic, a facial is a noninvasive skin treatment performed by licensed skin care professionals such as aestheticians and customized to your skin type and needs, and it advises picking a provider who is there to guide you rather than one focused on selling. A trained esthetician looks at your skin before choosing products and steps, and adjusts as the session unfolds. That matters because skin changes with the season, your routine and your stress level. A professional also knows which services combine well, which should wait, and when something calls for a healthcare provider.
